Acupuncture for irregular & heavy periods in London

When Your Period Starts Calling the Shots

A period that regularly disrupts your work, sleep, plans, energy or confidence is not something to simply manage around. Heavy bleeding, unpredictable timing, clotting, spotting, short cycles, long gaps between periods or feeling wiped out afterwards are all signs that your menstrual cycle deserves proper attention.

Your cycle is not separate from the rest of your health. It reflects how your hormones, nervous system, circulation, digestion, sleep, stress response and reproductive system are communicating. When that communication becomes erratic, acupuncture can be a useful way to help the body regain a steadier rhythm.

This is particularly relevant if your cycle has changed after stress, illness, stopping hormonal contraception, fertility treatment, pregnancy loss, perimenopause, or alongside conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids or adenomyosis.

Why Periods Become Heavy or Irregular

In Western medicine, irregular or heavy bleeding may be linked with hormonal fluctuation, irregular ovulation, thyroid changes, fibroids, polyps, PCOS, adenomyosis, endometriosis, contraception, medication, perimenopause or stress. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the focus is on how well Qi and Blood are moving, whether the body is holding Heat, Cold or stagnation and whether the Spleen, Liver or Kidney systems need support. In clinic, these two perspectives work well together: we look at the pattern of bleeding, cycle length, pain, clotting, mood, sleep, digestion, energy, temperature and fertility aims, rather than treating your period as an isolated event.

How Acupuncture Can Help

Acupuncture is used to support menstrual regulation by working with the nervous system, pelvic circulation, pain pathways and the body’s hormonal signalling. Treatment is not a one-size-fits-all “period protocol”. A woman with heavy flooding, heat signs and irritability needs a different approach from someone with long cycles, low energy and scanty bleeding.

The aim is to reduce disruption: steadier cycles, less excessive bleeding, fewer clots, less pain, better premenstrual symptoms and improved recovery after the bleed. If you are trying to conceive, we also look closely at ovulation, cervical mucus, luteal phase length, basal body temperature patterns if you track them, and how your period reflects the wider fertility picture.

Acupuncture can be especially useful when test results are “normal” but your cycle clearly is not. It gives us a practical framework to work with what is actually happening month by month.

  • Perimenopausal cycle changes

  • Menstrual symptoms alongside fertility treatment

When to Seek Medical Advice

Acupuncture can sit alongside medical investigation and treatment. Please seek medical advice if you have bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, bleeding after menopause, sudden heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, dizziness, fainting, symptoms of anaemia, or a major change in your usual cycle.

If you are soaking through protection very quickly, passing very large clots, or feel weak or light-headed, that should be assessed promptly. Heavy bleeding can contribute to low iron and conditions such as fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, endometriosis, PCOS or thyroid imbalance may need investigation.

The goal is not to avoid conventional care. The goal is to use the right tools at the right time.

An Integrated Approach

Menstrual health often responds best when the basics are not ignored. Alongside acupuncture we may look at cycle tracking, sleep, stress load, digestion, exercise, nutrition, iron status and whether further tests or referrals would be useful.

Where appropriate, acupuncture can work alongside your GP, gynaecologist, fertility clinic, nutritionist or pelvic health physiotherapist. This is especially important if your symptoms are severe, longstanding, changing quickly or linked with fertility concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Can acupuncture help heavy periods?

Acupuncture may help support the body’s regulation of the menstrual cycle, reduce associated pain and calm stress-related disruption. If bleeding is very heavy, new or worsening, it is also important to seek medical advice so that causes such as fibroids, polyps, thyroid changes or anaemia can be assessed.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your cycle pattern, your health history and whether there is an underlying diagnosis. Many women begin with weekly treatment for several cycles, then review progress as symptoms change.

Can I have acupuncture while trying to conceive?

Yes. Acupuncture is commonly used as part of fertility support, particularly where cycle regularity, ovulation, stress or menstrual symptoms are part of the picture.
