Acupuncture for digestive issues, bloating
and reflux in London
Digestive symptoms often come as a package rather than a single complaint. Bloating, reflux, constipation, diarrhoea and abdominal discomfort can all be connected and are often influenced by stress, diet, routine and nervous system tension.
For some people, symptoms are occasional and easy to link to certain foods or habits. For others, digestion feels unpredictable, sensitive or easily thrown off balance. Acupuncture is often used as part of a broader approach to help regulate digestion, support the nervous system and reduce the pattern of recurring symptoms.
a chinese medicine perspective
In Chinese medicine, digestive symptoms are not all viewed in the same way. Bloating may relate to Liver Qi stagnation, especially when stress, frustration or irregular eating are part of the picture. Reflux, nausea and irritation in the stomach may be linked with rebellious Stomach Qi. Constipation, loose stools and sluggish digestion are often associated with weakness in the Spleen and Stomach systems, which are seen as central to the body’s ability to transform food into energy.
Treatment is tailored to the individual pattern. The aim is not only to ease symptoms, but also to support smoother digestion overall and address the factors that may be keeping the problem going.
How acupuncture may help
People often come for acupuncture with symptoms such as:
bloating and excessive wind
acid reflux or heartburn
indigestion or a heavy feeling after eating
constipation
diarrhoea or alternating bowel habits
abdominal discomfort
nausea
digestion that feels easily upset by stress, rich food or irregular routines
From a Western perspective, acupuncture is being studied for its effects on gut motility, pain regulation and the gut-brain axis. In practice, many patients find that treatment helps settle the digestive system, reduce abdominal tension and support a calmer, more comfortable baseline.
Food, stress and digestion
Digestive health is rarely just about one symptom. Eating patterns, rushed meals, rich foods, alcohol, very cold foods, stress, worry and poor sleep can all affect how the digestive system functions.
This is one reason acupuncture can be so helpful for digestive complaints. Treatment does not just focus on the stomach or bowels in isolation. It also looks at the wider picture, including stress levels, energy, sleep, menstrual health where relevant and the foods or habits that may be aggravating symptoms.
Dietary advice may also form part of treatment, especially where bloating, reflux, loose stools or constipation are being made worse by everyday habits.
Our approach
At our clinic, treatment is tailored to the individual rather than the label alone. Two people may both have bloating or reflux, but the underlying pattern can be quite different. We take into account your symptoms, digestion, appetite, stress levels, sleep, energy and die, and use that fuller picture to guide treatment. The aim is to help settle current symptoms while also supporting longer-term digestive balance.
