Acupuncture for Recurrent miscarriage in London

Recurrent miscarriage is usually defined as three or more consecutive pregnancy losses, although many women now seek support and further investigation after two. UK guidance still uses the three-loss definition, while also encouraging clinical judgement to investigate earlier where appropriate.

This is an area I have worked in for many years, including experience alongside a Western recurrent miscarriage clinic. My approach is calm, practical and individual. If you have had repeated miscarriages, the aim is not simply to offer reassurance, but to look carefully at the full picture, identify where support is needed, and help you move forward with a clearer plan.

What Good Recurrent Miscarriage Care Should Involve

Good recurrent miscarriage care should involve more than one conversation and more than one lens. Depending on your history, it may include looking at hormone and thyroid function, clotting and immune factors, uterine health, embryo quality, cycle regulation, sperm factors, and any fertility treatment or investigations already undertaken. It is also not unusual for standard testing to find no single explanation, which is one reason why care needs to be thorough and well coordinated. (rcog.org.uk)

Acupuncture is not a replacement for medical investigation or consultant care, but it can be used alongside it as part of a more joined-up approach. In practice, treatment may be used to help regulate hormones, improve pelvic blood flow, calm the nervous system, reduce stress, support sleep, and create the best possible conditions going into conception and early pregnancy. It may also be used where immune or inflammatory factors are part of the wider picture, always alongside appropriate medical care. Current recurrent pregnancy loss guidance still focuses primarily on structured investigation and targeted medical treatment. (eshre.eu)

For many women, treatment is about more than the needles themselves. It is about having consistent, experienced support at a time that can otherwise feel fragmented, highly medicalised, or uncertain. Some acupuncture research in threatened miscarriage has reported improvements in symptoms such as bleeding, cramping and back pain, although this does not establish that acupuncture prevents miscarriage. “I started visiting Deborah for acupuncture after multiple pregnancy losses and I immediately felt held by her warmth and treatment. She asks great questions and is very open and supportive, I feel I can be totally myself around her and that she understands and responds incredibly well to my needs each week.

I’ve been visiting Deborah weekly and always look forward to my session each time - they’re a real highlight of my week. They help me nourish me in so many ways and my physical and mental health have both really improved since the beginning of my acupuncture journey with Deborah. She’s a true healer and I really appreciate the holistic approach she takes (amazing acupuncture treatment + great lifestyle advice).

I’m so grateful to have found Deborah and for her support in helping my recovery from loss and repositioning my body and mind to look to a brighter future.”

Who can benefit from Acupuncture?

I work with women who are:

  • Trying to conceive again after miscarriage

  • Under a recurrent miscarriage clinic

  • Having fertility treatment or IVF

  • Newly pregnant after previous losses and wanting support in the first trimester

The focus is not on vague reassurance. It is on considered, individual support based on your history, your investigations and where you are now.

If you have experienced more than one miscarriage and want experienced tailored support, you are welcome to book a consultation so we can look carefully at the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as recurrent miscarriage?

Recurrent miscarriage is usually defined as three or more first-trimester miscarriages, although clinicians may investigate after two when the pattern suggests more than sporadic loss. (rcog.org.uk)

Can acupuncture prevent miscarriage?

Acupuncture is not a guarantee against miscarriage and it should not replace appropriate medical investigation. However, it has been shown to modulate the immune system for recurrent miscarriage and lower miscarriage rates have been reported by IVF units using acupuncture in house.

What should recurrent miscarriage care involve?

It should involve a careful review of your history, previous investigations and relevant factors such as thyroid function, antiphospholipid antibodies and other clotting-related issues, uterine factors and broader fertility history. (rcog.org.uk)

Can I have acupuncture in early pregnancy?

Absolutely, but it should sit alongside standard medical care. If there is pain or bleeding in early pregnancy that needs proper medical assessment. NICE guidance covers diagnosis and initial management of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage in early pregnancy. (nice.org.uk)
