Acupuncture for PMDD in London

What is PmDD?

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, or PMDD, is more than “bad PMS”. It can bring a marked shift in mood, anxiety, irritability, anger, low confidence, overwhelm, tearfulness, brain fog, sleep changes, cravings, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches and fatigue in the days or weeks before a period. For many women, symptoms ease once bleeding starts, only to return the next cycle. PMDD is recognised as a severe premenstrual condition, and it deserves proper support, not dismissal.

How acupuncture can help PMDD

Acupuncture can be a valuable part of PMDD care, particularly when symptoms affect mood, sleep, stress resilience, pain, digestion and the nervous system. Treatment is tailored to your cycle pattern rather than using a one-size-fits-all protocol. In clinic, we look at when symptoms begin, what changes before your period, how you sleep, how your digestion behaves, your pain pattern, your stress load and how quickly your system settles once your period arrives.

Research into acupuncture and acupressure for premenstrual symptoms is still developing, but a Cochrane review found that acupuncture may reduce overall mood and physical PMS symptoms. When coping with PMDD, clinical experience and emerging research support acupuncture as a sensible, low-intervention option for women looking for more than “just put up with it”.

A Western and Chinese medicine view

From a Western perspective, PMDD is thought to involve an increased sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations after ovulation, particularly the interaction between ovarian hormones and brain chemistry such as serotonin and GABA. This helps explain why symptoms can feel so dramatic even when standard hormone tests look “normal”. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, PMDD often reflects a disruption in the smooth movement of Qi and Blood, commonly involving the Liver system, with possible patterns of constraint, heat, deficiency, digestive weakness or Blood imbalance. In practical terms, acupuncture aims to regulate the nervous system, support hormonal rhythm, reduce stress reactivity, improve sleep, ease pain and help the body move through the premenstrual phase with less volatility.

“I cannot recommend Deborah enough! I cam to see her after suffering with suspected endometriosis pain and PMDD. I had tried many things over the years and nothing helped. After consistently seeing Deborah I had my first pain free period in over 7 years and no longer have to take pain killers! It has also really eased my PMS symptoms. I am still amazed. Deborah really listens to my issues and adjusts treatment depending on what’s going on in my life. The space is warm and inviting and I find it so relaxing to see her. Thank you Deborah!

When to seek help

It is worth seeking support if your premenstrual symptoms regularly affect your relationships, work, parenting, confidence, sleep or ability to cope. PMDD can be frightening because it may feel as though your personality changes for part of the month. You are not being dramatic, weak or difficult; you are experiencing a recognised cyclical condition.

You should speak to your GP or a mental health professional urgently if you experience suicidal thoughts, self-harm thoughts, severe depression, panic, or feel unsafe at any point in your cycle. Acupuncture can sit alongside medical care, but it is not a replacement for urgent mental health support when symptoms are severe. PMDD may be managed with a combination of approaches, including lifestyle changes, CBT, SSRIs, hormonal treatment and complementary therapies depending on the individual.

Integrated support for PMDD

An integrated approach is often the most effective. Acupuncture may be used alongside medical treatment, talking therapy, nutrition, movement, sleep work and cycle tracking. The aim is not to force your body into a rigid version of “balance”, but to understand your pattern and reduce the intensity of the monthly crash.

In treatment, we may also discuss practical cycle strategies such as planning demanding tasks outside your most vulnerable phase, supporting blood sugar stability, reducing inflammatory load, protecting sleep, and using your symptom diary to identify clear patterns. This gives us a more accurate picture of what your body is doing and helps guide treatment.
