Acupuncture for heartburn iin pregnancy in London

Can acupuncture help with heartburn in pregnancy?

Heartburn is very common in pregnancy, especially as things progress and there is more pressure through the upper abdomen. For some women it is occasional and manageable. For others it becomes frequent, uncomfortable, and tiring, especially later in the day or when trying to sleep.

This is one of the many reasons women come to have acupuncture in pregnancy. They are eating differently, sleeping differently, carrying more pressure through the body and the digestion is simply not as comfortable as it was before.

Why is heartburn so common in pregnancy?

From a Western point of view, pregnancy heartburn is usually linked to a combination of hormonal change and pressure from the growing baby, which can make reflux and indigestion more likely. NHS guidance recommends starting with smaller meals, avoiding eating close to bedtime, sitting upright after eating, and reducing trigger foods if they make symptoms worse. If lifestyle measures are not enough, NICE CKS says antacids and alginates are usually first-line options in pregnancy.

From a Chinese medicine point of view, we look at whether Stomach Qi is not descending properly, whether there is heat, rebellion or a general sense that the body is no longer moving comfortably through the middle.

Why do women come to see me for pregnancy heartburn?

Usually because it is not just “a bit of heartburn.”

By this stage, heartburn often comes with bloating, nausea, poor sleep, a heavy or uncomfortable feeling after eating or that burning rising up into the chest and throat. NHS pregnancy guidance lists burning in the chest, bloating, nausea and discomfort after eating among the common symptoms.

When treating this, it’s important to look at the whole picture: what is aggravating it, when it is worst, how digestion is coping, how sleep is affected and what I think will help calm things down.

What can you expect from treatment?

The aim is to settle things.

Some women notice that the burning reduces quite quickly. Others need a short course of treatment, especially if the symptoms have been building for a while or are tied in with nausea, tension, poor sleep, or late-pregnancy pressure through the abdomen.

I take a practical approach: assess what is going on, treat accordingly, and support the body in a way that helps digestion feel less irritated and less reactive.

When should you book acupuncture for heartburn in pregnancy?

Whenever the symptoms are becoming regular enough that you want help with them.

You do not need to wait until the very end of pregnancy. Some women come earlier, others mention it as part of their birth preparation treatment in the third trimester. If heartburn is affecting eating, comfort, or sleep, it is worth addressing.

What do women usually ask about heartburn in pregnancy?

Is heartburn normal in pregnancy?

Yes, it is common in pregnancy and often becomes more noticeable later on.

Can acupuncture help with pregnancy heartburn?

Many women come for exactly that reason. I use treatment to calm the system, support digestion and reduce the sense of burning, fullness, or reflux.

Should I only rely on acupuncture?

No. Usual pregnancy advice still matters: smaller meals, staying upright after eating, and avoiding eating close to bedtime can help. If symptoms are not controlled, standard medical options such as antacids or alginates may also be appropriate.
