Acupuncture for Fibroids in London

Fibroids are very common, but their impact can vary enormously from one woman to another. For some, they are discovered by chance and cause very few symptoms. For others, they can affect daily life through heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, painful periods, bloating, low energy, anaemia or concerns around fertility and pregnancy. Acupuncture offers a calm, practical and personalised way to support your body, your cycle and your overall wellbeing, while working alongside appropriate medical care where needed. It provides space to look at the bigger picture — your symptoms, stress levels, menstrual pattern, digestion, energy and fertility goals — so that treatment is tailored to you rather than just the diagnosis.

Understanding Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb. Some are small and symptom-free, while others can contribute to heavy or prolonged periods, pelvic pain, bladder pressure, lower back discomfort, bloating, anaemia, fertility concerns or recurrent pregnancy complications. Fibroids are also more prevalent in some ethnic groups; Black women are more likely to develop fibroids and may experience more severe symptoms and longer delays in diagnosis and care.

From a Western medical perspective, fibroids are influenced by factors including hormones, genetics, age, inflammation, body weight and family history. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, fibroid-type patterns are often understood through the lens of blood stasis, phlegm-damp accumulation, Qi stagnation and underlying constitutional imbalance. In plain English, this means we look not only at the fibroid itself, but also at circulation, menstrual flow, digestion, stress, inflammation, pain patterns and how your whole system is functioning.

How Acupuncture Can Help

Acupuncture is not a replacement for scans, medical diagnosis or gynaecological care, but it can be a valuable part of an integrated approach. Treatment is focused on improving pelvic circulation, regulating the menstrual cycle, easing pain and cramping, calming the nervous system, supporting sleep and helping the body cope better with heavy or difficult periods.

Many women seek acupuncture because they want to feel more in control of their cycle, reduce monthly disruption, support fertility plans, prepare for medical treatment, or recover well after procedures such as myomectomy or fibroid embolisation. Current research into acupuncture for fibroids is still developing; earlier Cochrane evidence found limited high-quality trial data, while more recent reviews suggest acupuncture may be a promising complementary approach with a favourable safety profile when delivered by a qualified practitioner.

Fibroids, Fertility and Your Cycle

The impact of fibroids on fertility depends on their size, number and location. Submucosal fibroids, which affect the lining of the womb, are more likely to interfere with implantation or pregnancy, while other fibroids may cause no fertility problems at all. NICE guidance recommends that care should take into account the size, location and number of fibroids, symptom severity and a woman’s priorities, including whether she wants to preserve fertility or avoid surgery where possible.

In clinic, acupuncture treatment is tailored to where you are in your cycle and what you are trying to achieve: lighter bleeding, less pain, improved energy after blood loss, fertility preparation, IVF support, post-surgical recovery, or simply feeling less ruled by your symptoms.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Please seek medical assessment if your bleeding is very heavy, your periods suddenly change, you feel dizzy or exhausted, you have bleeding between periods or after sex, pelvic pain is worsening, your abdomen is increasing in size, or you are trying to conceive and suspect fibroids may be affecting fertility. You should also ask your GP about checking iron and ferritin levels if bleeding is heavy.

Acupuncture works well as part of an integrated plan. Depending on your symptoms, that may include ultrasound scans, blood tests, GP or gynaecology input, nutritional support, iron correction, herbal medicine where appropriate, stress management, exercise, or medical options such as medication, hormonal treatment, uterine artery embolisation, myomectomy or other specialist care.
