Acupuncture for fatigue and exhaustion in
pregnancy in London
Fatigue is one of the most common features of pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester and again in the third. In early pregnancy, the body is investing a remarkable amount of energy into establishing and sustaining the pregnancy. Later on, tiredness is more often driven by poor sleep, physical load, and the accumulated demands of late pregnancy.
This is not unusual, but it can still be difficult to manage. Treatment is not about denying the reality of pregnancy fatigue. It is about supporting the body more effectively through it. Acupuncture can be used alongside rest, diet, and appropriate lifestyle adjustments to help with energy, sleep, digestion, and overall regulation during pregnancy.e problem.
Why is fatigue so marked in the first trimester?
For many women, the first trimester brings a level of tiredness that feels out of proportion to everything else. From a Western perspective, this makes sense. Hormonal change is rapid, metabolic demand increases, and the body is directing substantial resources towards the early development of the baby and placenta.
From an acupuncture perspective, early pregnancy is a phase in which energy is being drawn inward to support growth and consolidation. Treatment is therefore focused on support rather than stimulation. In practice, that may involve not only addressing fatigue itself, but also the associated factors that make it more difficult to manage, such as nausea, reduced appetite, poor sleep, or a general sense of depletion.
Why does fatigue often return in the third trimester?
By the third trimester, the picture is usually more physical. Sleep is often lighter and more interrupted. The body is carrying significantly more weight. Movement can feel less efficient, and the cumulative demands of pregnancy begin to show.
At this stage, acupuncture treatment is often used to support better quality rest, reduce physical tension, and help the body adapt more comfortably to the final months of pregnancy. Even where fatigue cannot be removed altogether, improving sleep and easing strain can make a meaningful difference to how manageable it feels.
“I started seeing Deborah weekly a couple of months ago in the early stages of my pregnancy. She has been amazing and I really look forward to the sessions. Before each sessions she the time to understand how I’m feeling and any symptoms I’m having and tailors the treatment accordingly. I leave feeling relaxed and happy - and I have the best sleeps after treatment!! I’m now in my second trimester and looking forward to continuing right up until birth. Thanks Deborah! :-)”

Can acupuncture help with pregnancy exhaustion?
Acupuncture is used in pregnancy as a supportive treatment. It is not a substitute for rest or good nutrition, but it can be a valuable part of a broader treatment approach.
Clinically, it is often most helpful where fatigue sits alongside other symptoms, particularly sleep disturbance, nausea, digestive discomfort, muscular tension, or a heightened sense of stress and overload. Treatment is tailored to the individual presentation rather than applied as a fixed protocol.
There is some research suggesting acupuncture may be helpful for pregnancy-related symptoms, including sleep and general wellbeing, although the evidence base is still evolving. In practice, the value of treatment is often that it helps the patient feel more settled, more rested, and better able to cope with the physical demands of pregnancy.
Can diet influence energy levels?
Very often, yes. Energy in pregnancy is affected not only by the pregnancy itself, but by how well the body is being fuelled and how well digestion is functioning.
In practical terms, that usually means regular meals, adequate protein, and food that is substantial enough to support steady energy rather than short-lived peaks and crashes. Iron-rich foods may also be important, particularly where tiredness is more persistent. Where nausea or poor appetite are part of the picture, the emphasis is usually on simple, digestible, nourishing meals rather than idealised nutrition.
If you are experiencing fatigue during pregnancy and would like supportive treatment, acupuncture can form part of a practical, individualised approach to care.
