Acupuncture for endometriosis in London

Endometriosis can feel like your body has a monthly argument with itself — and sometimes not even monthly. For many women, the pain starts before the bleed, builds through the period and leaves a kind of heavy, bruised exhaustion behind. For others, it shows up as pelvic pain, bloating, bowel discomfort, pain during sex, fatigue, backache, ovulation pain or a cycle that never quite feels settled.

And then there is the other layer: being told it is “just period pain”, waiting too long for answers, managing work, relationships, fertility concerns and a nervous system that is understandably on high alert.

Acupuncture is a strong, practical treatment option here. Not as a vague wellness add-on, but as a focused way to work with pain, inflammation, pelvic circulation, hormonal rhythm, stress load and the way your body responds across the cycle.

When Period Pain Is Not Just Period Pain

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus. It can contribute to inflammation, pelvic pain, scar tissue, adhesions and sometimes fertility difficulties. The NHS describes it as a condition that can have a significant impact on life, with symptoms including period pain, pelvic pain, pain during or after sex, bowel and bladder symptoms, fatigue and difficulty getting pregnant.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, endometriosis is rarely seen as one single pattern. There may be Blood Stasis, where pain is sharp, fixed or clotty; Qi stagnation, where symptoms flare with stress and tension; cold or heat patterns; dampness; digestive involvement; or an underlying depletion where the body simply does not recover well after each cycle. In Western language, we are looking at pain signalling, inflammation, circulation, muscular guarding, hormonal communication and nervous system load. Different maps, same woman in the room.

How Acupuncture Can Help

Good endometriosis treatment is not about chasing symptoms randomly. It is about reading the cycle carefully.

Where is the pain?
When does it start?
Is it stabbing, dragging, burning, cramping, heavy or swollen?
Do you get clots? Bowel pain? Ovulation pain? PMS? Fatigue?
Are you trying to conceive? Recovering from surgery? On hormonal medication? Waiting for investigations?

That detail matters.

Acupuncture may help by calming the nervous system, supporting the release of the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals, improving local circulation, easing pelvic and abdominal tension and helping regulate the stress response. The NHS notes that acupuncture stimulates sensory nerves under the skin and in muscles, which can lead to the release of natural pain-relieving substances.

The research on acupuncture for endometriosis is still developing, but it is encouraging. A 2023 systematic review found that acupuncture showed benefit in reducing menstrual pain and overall pelvic pain in endometriosis.

In clinic, women often come for help with:

  • painful periods that wipe them out

  • pelvic pain or heaviness

  • ovulation pain

  • pain that flares before the bleed

  • bloating and digestive changes around the cycle

  • fatigue and poor recovery after menstruation

  • fertility support alongside endometriosis

  • support before or after surgery

  • stress, sleep disruption and feeling constantly braced against pain

The aim is simple: less pain, better cycles, more resilience and a body that feels less like it is fighting itself.

“I cannot recommend Deborah enough! I came to see her after suffering with suspected endometriosis pain, I had tried many things over the years and nothing helped. After consistently seeing Deborah I had my first pain free period in over 7 years and no longer have to take pain killers! It has also really eased my PMS symptoms. I am still amazed. Deborah really listens to my issues and adjusts treatment depending on what’s going on in my life. The space is warm and inviting and I find it so relaxing going to see her. Thank you Deborah!”

A More Intelligent Way to Support the Cycle

With endometriosis, timing treatment well can make a real difference. Sometimes the focus is on calming pain before the period. Sometimes it is about supporting the bleed to be smoother and less stagnant. Sometimes we work around ovulation, digestion, sleep, inflammation or fertility treatment.

This is where acupuncture can be particularly useful: it is adaptable. Your treatment can change as your symptoms change.

One week we may focus on pain and pelvic tension. Another week on digestion and bloating. Another on stress, sleep and the premenstrual build-up. If you are trying to conceive, the treatment can be shaped around your fertile window, luteal phase, IVF cycle or post-surgical recovery.

That is the difference between generic treatment and proper women’s health acupuncture.

When to Get Help

You do not need to wait until the pain is unbearable. In fact, it is better not to.

Consider booking in if your periods regularly interfere with work, sleep, exercise, relationships or normal life. It is also worth seeking support if you need strong painkillers every month, have pain during sex, bowel or bladder symptoms around your period, significant bloating, fatigue that feels disproportionate, or fertility concerns.

You should also speak to your GP or gynaecologist if your symptoms are severe, worsening, new, or affecting your ability to conceive. NICE guidance covers diagnosis and management of endometriosis, including when fertility is a priority and recommends appropriate referral and investigation where symptoms suggest endometriosis.

Acupuncture works well alongside conventional care. You do not have to choose between being medically sensible and seeking natural support. The best approach is often integrated: acupuncture, appropriate medical investigation, pelvic health physiotherapy, nutrition, movement, pain management, hormonal treatment or surgery where needed.

Endometriosis, Fertility and Feeling Heard

Endometriosis can bring up a lot around fertility — sometimes quietly, sometimes very loudly. You may be trying naturally, preparing for IVF, recovering from surgery, or simply wondering whether your cycle is giving you clues.

Acupuncture can be used to support cycle regularity, pelvic blood flow, stress regulation, sleep, digestion and the overall terrain in which conception is trying to happen. It is not a magic wand and it should not delay proper fertility investigation, but it can be a very valuable part of the plan.

NICE specifically includes fertility considerations in its endometriosis guidance and notes that specialist services should have access to fertility services as part of multidisciplinary care.

Frequently asked questions

Can acupuncture cure endometriosis?

No. Acupuncture does not remove endometriosis lesions and it is not a cure. It can, however, be very helpful for managing pain, reducing flare patterns, supporting the nervous system, improving cycle comfort and helping you feel more in control of your symptoms.

Is acupuncture good for endometriosis pain?

Yes, acupuncture is commonly used for pain and can be a strong option for women with endometriosis-related pelvic pain, period pain and muscular tension. Research is still growing, but current evidence is encouraging, particularly for pain reduction.

How many sessions will I need?

For endometriosis, I usually suggest a consistent course rather than one-off treatment. Weekly sessions over several cycles often gives the clearest picture of how your body responds. Once symptoms are steadier, treatment can usually be spaced out.

Can acupuncture help if I am trying to conceive?

Yes, acupuncture can be used as part of fertility support for women with suspected or diagnosed endometriosis. Treatment may focus on cycle regulation, pelvic circulation, stress response, sleep, digestion and supporting the body alongside natural conception or assisted fertility treatment.

Can I have acupuncture alongside medication or surgery?

Usually, yes. Acupuncture can often work alongside pain relief, hormonal treatment, fertility medication, IVF, or surgical recovery. You should not stop prescribed medication without speaking to your doctor.

Should I still see a doctor?

Yes. If you suspect endometriosis, medical assessment matters. Acupuncture can support your symptoms and wellbeing, but it should sit alongside appropriate investigation, especially if pain is severe, symptoms are changing, or fertility is a concern.
