Acupuncture for back pain in London

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek help and it does not always arrive for dramatic reasons. Sometimes it follows lifting, sport or a long drive. It can come on after weeks of sitting badly, poor sleep, stress or simply waking up and finding that something has gone into spasm. Musculoskeletal conditions account for up to 30% of GP consultations in England, and back pain is one of the biggest contributors within that group.

Our approach to back pain is integrated. We look at the back through a Western clinical lens, taking into account the spine, muscles, discs, joints and nerves, but we also draw on the diagnostic framework of Chinese medicine, which differentiates much more carefully between types of pain. In Chinese medicine, back pain may be understood as stagnation of Qi and blood in the local area, but it can also be shaped by patterns such as cold and damp, overuse, tension or underlying weakness. For example, some people describe a back that feels stiff, heavy and worse in cold or damp weather, yet improves with warmth. Others find that heat aggravates the pain instead. Those differences are important, because they point to different treatment strategies rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

How Acupuncture, Massage & Moxibustion May Help with Back pain

In clinic, the best results often come from combining acupuncture, massage and moxibustion rather than relying on one method alone. Acupuncture can help calm pain, release spasm and settle the nervous system. Massage helps reduce muscular guarding and soft tissue tension. Moxibustion can then further eliminate pain and emotional tension which improves movement and helps the back start functioning more normally again. That three-way approach is often especially helpful where pain has led to both stiffness and fear of movement.

Research is encouraging, especially for chronic low back pain. A 2025 Cochrane review found that acupuncture can reduces pain and improves function for people with chronic low back pain compared with no treatment, and improves function compared with usual care. A 2026 systematic review also found greater reductions in pain and disability with acupuncture versus usual care.

“I first went to Debs for a deep tissue massage (heaven) and then came back during my pregnancy in my second trimester. I was having a hard-time with hip/back pain and my mental well-being was pretty rubbish too. I needed help and Debs sorted me out!”

Our approach

Treatment is always tailored to the person in front of us. That may mean focusing on acute spasm, one-sided tightness, postural strain, recurrent flare-ups, stiffness first thing in the morning, pain after sitting, or a back that is simply not recovering as it should. The aim is not just to blunt symptoms, but to treat the root cause to help restore movement, reduce pain and get things settling properly again.
