East Dulwich.

 

East Dulwich is a fashionable residential neighbourhood five miles south of the City of London in the borough of Southwark, and part of the historical county of Surrey. First recorded as Dilwihs in a charter signed by Edgar the Peaceful in 967AD, the name derives from the Old English words “dile wisc”, meaning “Marshy Meadow Where Dill Grows”.  Dulwich is known for a few things, not least its renowned art gallery – The Dulwich Picture Gallery and prestigious boys' school – The Dulwich College. Walking around Dulwich is like stepping into a rural village in the middle of London. 

Dulwich Park was formed in 1890 from the fields of Dulwich Court Farm and its neighbours. Soon afterwards, the Crown and Greyhound took the place of two 18th-century inns as the focal point of the village. Around this time, new streets of redbrick terraces linked Dulwich Village with Turney Road.  The modern day park now boasts a cricket pitch which is populated in the summer months Dulwich Cricket Club, established in 1867, is one of the leading cricket clubs in south London and plays competitive Surrey Championship Cricket at the highest level.

Dulwich additionally has a golf course, and a vibrant high street with picturesque shops and pubs. If you’re a foodie then look no further. Populated with a majority of local independent local restaurants and bars you can’t go wrong if you’re out to impress someone. 

If you’re a football fan that the Dulwich Hamlets football club and stadium have a loyal following and a game is always a good excuse to go for a pint at their local – The East Dulwich Tavern or the EDT as it is more affectionately known by the locals.

In the 2011 census the population of East Dulwich was 12,321 and is made up of approximately 52% females and 48% males. The average age of people in East Dulwich is 36, while the median age is lower at 34. 70.3% of people living in East Dulwich were born in England.
